The 3 Hottest Trends in Bridesmaid Dresses

Short bridesmaid dressOne of the most visceral aspects of any wedding is the attire, especially in relation to the bride and the bridesmaids (and secondarily, the mother of the bride).  I’ve written about wedding dresses in the past, but for today’s post I’ll be drilling down and focusing specifically on bridesmaid dress trends for 2012.

It’s no secret that fashion trends are in a constant state of flux year in and year out, and bridesmaid dresses are certainly no different.  In fact, the popular styles tend to change somewhat dramatically every five years or so; therefore, you certainly don’t want to assume that your dress from 10 years ago will still look good in 2012!

So, what do you do? Well, you read this post for starters! Then, in conjunction with the bride, do some research and try on a few styles to see which one might work the best.

When it comes to bridesmaid fashion, less is definitely more in 2012. Long and tea length dresses are great for the mother of the bride, but this style is generally too passé for modern bridal parties.  Dresses that are above the knee are extremely trendy right now, which is great for younger, more free-spirited bridal parties.

In terms of the actual design, the more contemporary the details, the better.  Low necklines, flutter sleeves and a dash of asymmetry are just a few examples of the contemporary attributes of today’s trendy bridesmaid dresses.

Additionally, dress fabrics are becoming lighter and more feminine.  Fabrics such as silk, chiffron and lace are 3 of the most popular materials at the moment.  The days of heavy, constrictive bridesmaid dress fabrics have gone the way of the typewriter (thank God!).

Bridesmaid dress colors are becoming more bold and bright in 2012. Colors such as plum, sky blue and light rose are becoming more and more popular.  Really, the main change regarding color trends this year relative to prior years is that the rules have effectively been thrown out the window.  In 2012 and hopefully beyond, any color can be worn without the fear of being viewed as taboo.  And in fact, in some weddings each bridesmaid wears the same style of dress but in different colors.  So like I said, the only rule right now is that there are no rules!

I sincerely hope you enjoyed this “quick and dirty” overview of the 3 hottest trends for bridesmaid dresses in 2012.  If you want more detailed information about this topic, as well as a bridesmaid dress photo gallery, please check out this great article.  Enjoy!
