The Wedding is Over: Now What?

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you probably know that 99% of what I write about pertains to wedding planning activities – that is, the days, weeks and months leading up to the wedding.  But for today’s post, I thought I’d tackle a new angle – what to do after the wedding is over.

And no, I’m not talking about the honeymoon; rather, I’m talking about the ‘business’ items that must be handled in order to properly and officially merge 2 lives into one.

Obviously, in the vast majority of cases you’ll need to change your last name with the Social Security Office.  Click here for a resource that describes exactly how to go about doing this.  Similarly, assuming you haven’t lived together previously, you’ll need to go to the post office and have your mail forwarded and also follow-up with all of your accounts to make sure the correct address is on each one.

You will then need to do some things related to driving – such as getting a new driver’s license, updated auto insurance, and new license plates.  You’ll also need to deal with merging or updating your various household accounts, such as opening up a new bank account, merging your phone accounts, etc.

You will then need to handle all the wrap-up tasks associated with the wedding itself – such as sending thank you cards, selecting the wedding pictures for the album, cleaning and packing away the wedding dress, and even selling some of your wedding-related items that you’ll never use again on eBay.

As you can see, although these tasks are incredibly mundane, they aren’t particularly difficult to do.  Yes the list will require some of your time, but not too much of your brain power.  Follow the advice from the Nike slogan: ‘Just Do it.”

Finally, here are a couple of other quick points. First, give yourself a 2-week deadline to help keep yourself on track.  Second, do not procrastinate, as doing so will often result in things being forgotten or otherwise slipping through the cracks.  Good luck!
