Shopping for a youthful mother of the bride dress

When your daughter or son is getting married, it’s a difficult choice to find the appropriate dress to wear on the big day. Many women may go through hundreds or thousands of dresses and still feel that they haven’t found the right one. Some women might be turned off by the traditional mother of the bride dress, and they may believe it better suits a woman older than themselves. Even women searching for grandmother of the bride dresses may not want to be limited by tradition. However, it’s possible to find the dress that is both appropriate and shows off your youthful personality.

Talk to the bride about what she expects

Whether the bride is your daughter, soon-to-be daughter-in-law, or granddaughter, remember that the wedding day is about the love between her and the groom. If someone is going to compromise, it should be you, not the bride. Talk to her about what kind of vibe she plans for her wedding, and consult her as you search for a dress. She may be more traditional than you, and you should respect her wishes.

Look beyond “mother of the bride” searches

Many stores and bridal shops have a special section that feature mother of the bride and mother of the groom dresses. This is a great place to start your search, but if you want something a little less traditional, you may need to check the other sections of the website or store. Avoid colors that are too bold, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay neutral. A muted teal or deep purple can be both flattering and young-looking.

Show a bit more skin (But not too much!)

It’s OK to show a bit more skin than the traditional mother of the bride dress if you feel confident and the bride approves, especially for a summer wedding. Just make sure you aren’t showing more skin than the bride is! Even if you feel young and hot, your role on the wedding day is to be a mother first and foremost. A little bit goes a long way, so consider a slit in the leg, skipping the sleeves, or going with a knee-length dress.

Look for high-fashion details

Too many sequins or jewels can look matronly. It’s better to find a dress that has some beautiful details, but isn’t overwhelmed by them. Look for stitching or lace that looks, and makes you feel, young and trendy.
