Jackets –  the perfect shape for your daughter’s big day

Many mothers of the bride opt for a classic skirt suit.Smiling mother of the bride wearing formal jacket

Not only does a suit like this flatter a range of shapes, but a range of ages too. Here we take a look at how to choose the perfect suit jacket for the big day – one that will make you look fabulous, suit your style, and flatter your shape no matter what your size.

Apple shapes

If you have an apple-shaped figure, your shoulders will tend to be broader than your hips, your bust may be larger, and your waist may be a little less defined. To help with your waist, look for single breast jackets that button at the waist to help to cinch you in at the middle, creating shape.

To help balance your broader shoulders against your narrower hips avoid jackets that have too much structuring or detailing at the shoulders, and definitely avoid shoulder pads. Stick to thin lapels and vertical seams to lengthen your torso and keep your shoulders in proportion.

Pear shapes

This is the most common female shape in the UK. If you’re pear shaped, you will be narrower on top, with wider hips and thighs.

As your hips are wider, you want to broaden the appearance of your shoulders to balance out your shape. This doesn’t mean you need to look for shoulder pads. Look for jackets with wide lapels, which can look wonderfully dramatic, and look for well-defined structured shoulders too.

Hourglass shapes

If you’re lucky enough to have an hourglass figure then a good jacket will help to accentuate your wonderfully feminine curves, not hide them.

The key here is to flatter your waist. The best styles for you are single breasted, particularly jackets that button with just one button at the waist. Alternatively look for belted jackets that will help to cinch in your waist too.

Lengthen your torso to keep your bust looking slim by looking for deep v-neck jackets, never high-neck. This will draw the eye down to your cinched in waist and give you the appearance of added height too.

Where to shop

There are plenty of bridal boutiques that specialise in wedding suits for soon to be mother in laws. You’ll find an even bigger selection online, or if you’re looking for something truly unique you might want to consider going vintage.

While your daughter’s wedding day is a special one, you shouldn’t discount the high street. Many high street stores now have their own unique collections from young designers, including shops like New Look. Try stores like this for the latest trends in jackets, and the great thing about high street stores is that they cater for a whole range of sizes too, far more than designer stores do.
